2013 was a year that the Brown side of the family all got together for the thanksgiving meal and festivities... At dinner, (which was held at Erica's house), Benjamin was sitting next to his cousin, Conrad Archibald, who was not interested in eating all the food that had been given to him. He instead attempted to put the unwanted food onto Benjamin's plate, who was also not interested in the discarded food.

Funny Kid quotes to Remember
For the past few months we have been having FHE lessons focusing on baptism in preparation for Quincy to be baptized the first weekend of August. She seemed to have a pretty good grasp on the purpose of the whole ordinance. Saturday morning, about an hour before she was supposed to arrive at the Stake Center for her baptism, she asks me
Q: "Mom? Am I going to remember ANYTHING after I come out of the water?" I'm sure I looked at her, somewhat confused and then replied,
M: "Yes, sweetheart. Heavenly Father forgets about the things we have done wrong in the past, but we don't forget anything when we get baptized. You'll remember the same things you remember now. That's how we learn! If we forgot everything, then we would not remember the consequences that happened."
Q: "Are you going to forget things?"
M: "Nope. Just Heavenly Father forgets the things we did wrong."
Q: "So basically, nobody forgets anything..."
M: "Basically."
The next day, I was team substitute teaching Benjamin's primary class (sunbeams). We were having a lesson on obedience. Jamie Johnson Morrow was teaching the lesson. She asked, "Does your mom or dad ever ask you to do anything?" Some of the kids (like Benjamin) nodded emphatically, while others obliviously replied, "No." Throughout the next section of dialogue Benjamin stated (very matter of factly) that, "When mom is happy, I'm happy!" (what a smart and sweet boy!)

The Worst Week So Far
A lot of people say they look forward to school starting because it means an end to the chaos of summer and life falls back into a routine. For the Haslam family this year, the first week of school has NOT been the means of getting us back into a routine. In fact, its just been downright pretty rough, not to mention draining on the finances!
Friday: Valynn and James come home from the hospital! Dinner brought in by Susan (THANK YOU!) Up all night with James trying to figure out the whole newborn schedule and sleeping arrangements.
Saturday: Take James in to recheck his bilirubin levels. (Dinner at the neighbor's house, yummy pizza! Thank you Dan and Betsy Alvey!) Again, up all night trying to make the on demand feeding/sleeping thing work. (P.S.-- our couch may be comfortable, but it's not THAT comfortable!)
Sunday: Decided not to attempt church. Valynn's milk came in and she was pretty miserable, not to mention the other discomforts of the body trying to recover from delivering a large baby. Abdominal pain that acts very much like a hernia. Take James in to re-check bilirubin levels. Family dinner at Dad and Mom's (THANK YOU!) complete with a power struggle between parents and children over eating food and drinking juice. That night Brandon stayed up all night while Valynn and James took over the bed and got a few hours of good sleep.
Monday: Take James back in to re-check bilirubin levels. Back to school night for Quincy! Ms. Riddick seems very nice, thank you mom for watching the kids while we were there. Valynn and James are able to sleep relatively well in bed while Brandon makes due on the couch.
Tuesday: First day of school! Brandon wakes up with flank pain and can hardly walk around the house due to pain. Possible kidney stone? Dinner provided by Missy, (THANK YOU!) That night Quincy complains of severe constipation and is up until midnight crying because she "can't get it out!" I notice James is not moving one of his arms normally.
Wednesday: Eleanor's first day of preschool! She is excited to go, Quincy is late for school, but we all make it. Benjamin gets to play with neighbors while Brandon and I take James in to the pediatrician who informs us that he has a broken clavicle on the left side. Quincy comes home from school complaining of her "privates itching"-- up most the night with her and James alternately crying trying to find out if the problem is yeast, soap irritation, or a UTI. Babysitting Bimala begins after a short break meant to help us settle in after a new baby.
Thursday: Quincy reports privates aren't itchy now, just her "poop hole". Happy anniversary dinner at Tucano's with the Haslam family, but on the way in Brandon tries to pick up Eleanor who is surprised by his approach from behind and falls out of his arms and lands on her head. Other children (Bimala as well) divided between Aunts (Thank you!) while Brandon and I take Eleanor to the ER with multiple vomiting episodes. CAT scan shows no skull fracture or brain bleed (RELIEF!) Brandon in the bathroom most of the evening trying to pass a kidney stone. Up all night making sure Eleanor is okay, Quincy complaining of severe anal itching, and James being a normal newborn.
Friday: Eleanor feeling well, goes to preschool. Quincy goes to school too but teacher calls at 3:30 when school is dismissed to inform us that Quincy has been asleep in class for the past hour and is complaining of a headache. Comes home and sleeps for 2 hours, complaining of headache, rash all over, and anal itching. We try baths and ibuprofen before bed. Up all night again with anal itching and headache. We attempt medication for possible pin worms-- 2 hours later Quincy is up again with fever, headache, and a rash all over.
Saturday: Appointment with on call pediatrician. Fight with Quincy who is embarrassed to go in and have a doctor look at her privates. Complains of slight sore throat at breakfast. Rash continues, anal itching continues. Pediatrician's diagnosis: scarlet fever. Antibiotics, benadryl, and neosporin.... hope we can sleep through the night (or at least most of it!) tonight!
So, I'm pretty sure that we have met our deductible for the year after the past two weeks! We are very blessed to have family, friends, neighbors, and health care providers that can help us out and that none of the week's events have ended up being more serious problems-- but all bunched on top of each other in addition to very little sleep, We are all hoping for things to calm down and life to become a little more routine again.

James Powell Haslam
James Powell Haslam
Our sweet little boy was born at 5:38pm today after 8 hours of labor. I was induced (as always) but thanks to an epidural I was pretty comfortable throughout the whole thing. He weighed 9 lbs 6 oz, is 20 inches long, and sadly, attempted to come out of the birth canal face first instead of crown of the head first so he has some bruising on his face and nose. We're so glad he is here, and are happy to have a healthy boy join our family!

Benjamin's Choo Choo
Tonight while getting the girls ready for bed I corralled Benjamin into his room. After finishing reading bedtime stories to Eleanor and Quincy, I returned to Benjamin's room to start his bedtime routine. When I opened the door I found Benjamin sitting on the floor with a bag of diapers torn open and a line of diapers very carefully trailing across the room. He informed me it was for his choo choo train.
We buy huggies diapers in bulk from Costco. In each box there are two types of diapers intermingled. In the current box there are diapers with only Mickey Mouse or diapers with both Minnie and Mickey Mouse printed on the front. Benjamin has decided that he likes the diapers with both Minnie and Mickey on the front and gets upset (or runs away) when I attempt to use the Mickey only diapers.
Apparently his dislike for Mickey only diapers spans all uses-- because on closer examination of Benjamin's train track I realized that he had separated EVERY Minnie and Mickey diaper out of the package to use in his track and rejected all the Mickey only diapers into a pile in the corner of his room.
Then of course, he needed to find his "Choo Choo Thomas" to ride on the tracks. What a boy!!
As a side note-- this pregnancy is almost over. I am officially 37 weeks and a few days and if I do not go into labor prior, I have an induction scheduled for August 20th. Hooray! I will be grateful to be able to off-load some of the extra water I am retaining and to separate myself from me and my internal heater!! :) Now just praying for a healthy baby and a smooth labor and delivery!

Eleanor-ism
It's a little sad (in my opinion) that if Eleanor makes a decision and then decides later that it was not the decision she wanted she tells everyone who will listen that it was an ACCIDENT....
This morning we woke up (early of course, because although it is Spring Break, we apparently like to see the sunrise....) and Eleanor informed Brandon that she had a dream last night that she
"Accidently drove the car to go swimming."
We have instigated a reward system at our house that includes earning "puffs" with good behavior and losing them for bad behavior. Once the container is all full of your "puffs" we allow the girls to choose a reward from the "Treasure Box". Both Quincy and Eleanor filled up their containers this morning and were allowed to pick a treasure prize. Quincy chose an ice cream cone from Maceys, while Eleanor chose a felt coloring picture and markers. I took Quincy to get her ice cream cone this afternoon and explained to Eleanor that it was the prize Quincy had chosen, and so Eleanor was not invited to come with us this time. Kristen (my SIL) informed me when I got home that Eleanor had told her that she had "Accidently picked out a coloring page from the treasure box instead of the ice cream cone so she did not get to go, but that she could choose an ice cream cone the next time."
Hopefully after having enough accidents, Eleanor will choose to happier with her decisions.

Hooray for spring! I don't know about all of you, but January and February were a little overdrawn for us.... To end off the year Quincy was diagnosed with Mononucleosis (who knew a 5 year old could get "the kissing disease"? I don't know WHO she has been kissing, but....) :)
We were glad she didn't miss very much of school because of winter break. Finally getting a confirmed diagnosis was a little traumatic, including 2 separate blood draws because the wrong tests were ordered, but we made it, and hopefully quarantined ourselves well enough that we didn't spread it to others! January and February continued with the sickness.... coughs, colds, fevers, possibly RSV?, breathing treatments, heating pads, and lots of medication-- we are SO glad to finally have the sun come out and be able to get some fresh air!!
In addition to finally having everyone healthy, we are also happy to announce that Valynn is pregnant again. Lots of people are surprised that we are pregnant again so soon but we are now about 17 weeks along and so far everything is going well. We are scheduled for our 20 week ultrasound the last week of March and hope to be able to report all is well then, as well. We are all very excited and surprisingly our girls did a pretty good job keeping "our secret" quiet.
Quincy has lost 2 teeth and her top teeth are starting to get wiggly. Eleanor is writing her name, has become very reliable in making her bed to earn money to put in our LETS GO TO DISNEYLAND SAVINGS TIN. Benjamin has discovered how to climb out of his crib, is communicating fairly effectively and is not afraid to give you his opinion. He also wants to do everything himself and Brandon is almost positive he has OCD regarding hand washing.
